The Standard Schnauzer is the oldest of the three Schnauzer sizes of which there are three sizes; miniature, standard and giant. The breeds name comes from the look of its facial hair “schnauzer” in German, where the breed originated as a hunter of vermin on the farm and family guard dog. While the breed was imported into the United States in the 1960’s it remained very rare for many more years. The Schnauzer’s coat is dense, wiry and weather-resistant. This gives him protection from the harsh weather. The coat is solid black or salt and pepper and will require regular grooming including brushing and stripping so owners must plan on spending time maintaining this breed’s coat. The AKC recognized this breed in the Working Group in 1930. The Schnauzer can have cropped, erect ears, or natural drop ears. The AKC recognized this breed in the Working Group in 1904. The Standard Schnauzer ranges in size from 17 to 19 inches tall at the withers.
