Technically, cowboy boots are a specific kind of riding boot. There are two basic types of cowboy boots–western style and the newer “roper” style. A western style boot is a tall boot (reaching mid-calf) and has a higher angled heel. The roper style was designed to accommodate the needs of cowboys participating in rodeo calf-roping competitions. Roper boots are shorter and have a lower heel, making it easier for cowboys to dismount, run full-speed to, and then tie the calf.
