Looking at these old stamps is looking back at Alaska’s rich history. In 1867, Alaska was purchased from Russia for $7.2 million. With the gold rushes (1890-1910), thousands of miners and settlers came to Alaska. With this influx of people, Alaska was officially organized as a U.S. territory in 1912. On January 3, 1959 President Eisenhower proclaimed Alaska to be the 49th state.
