There is some dispute regarding exactly when the tuxedo was created (replacing tailcoats with the shorter dinner jacket). There also seems to be an issue regarding who created the tux. Was it Griswold Lorillard or James Brown Potter? Nonetheless, in 1930 a “faultlessly fashioned and carefully tailored tuxedo” cost only $22.50.
