The Mormon Temple was designed by Truman O. Angell, and is the major focal point of Temple Square. Used for marriages, baptisms and other sacred ordinances, it may disappoint the well-meaning Gentile to learn that entry to the Temple is restricted to Latter-day Saints with passes or recommends from their Bishops. The walls of the Temple are made of gigantic blocks of granite. At its base, the granite walls of the Temple are 9 feet thick. Upwards the walls taper to a diminutive thickness of only 6 feet! Atop of the eastern center spire stands the Angel Maroni. Maroni is integral to the story of the Mormon, and in accordance with Mormon literature, his trumpet is raised to announce the restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The statue itself is 12 feet, 5 ½ tall, and is constructed of hammered copper covered in gold leaf. Maroni has withstood the gale forces of 90 mile-hour winds due to a unique leverage-action system, and a special connection with the forces above. Hand-blown and hand-painted in Poland.
