Back in 1902, the sight of New York’s first skyscraper standing a perilous 22 stories tall both fascinated and unsettled passers-by. For women, there was extra anxiety because the updrafts around the building were notorious for blowing skirt hems skyward. (On the other hand, many men viewed the gusts as a racy side-benefit of modern architecture. Before long, the police code for dispersing gawkers there, 23 skidoo, even entered common parlance.) One way or another, the Flatiron has always been an attention-grabber. Designed by Daniel H. Burnham, it is a blend of Gothic and Renaissance motifs divided stylistically into three parts, akin to a Greek column. Of course, its shape rather than its decoration is what makes it so distinctive. Situated on a triangular sliver of land, the building is only 6.5 ft. wide at the vertex. It was originally named the Fuller Building, after its ambitious owners. Hand-blown and hand-painted in Poland.
