There are many different birthday traditions when it comes to birthday cakes. A common tradition is placing candles on the birthday cake. The number of candles reflects the age of the birthday person. Before blowing out the candles, a silent wish is made (by the birthday person). If all of the candles are blown out in one breath, it means the wish will come true and the person will enjoy good luck in the coming year. Another tradition is to smear out the name of the person before slicing the cake in order to bring good luck. In the Mexican community, the birthday person’s face is smashed into the cake before slicing. The smashed piece is eaten by the one with the icing on his/her face.
