Our landscapes are inspired by the artistry of the screens and scrolls found in Japanese culture. Over the centuries, screens (sliding doors), hanging scrolls, fans, and hand-rolled scrolls have been the means of expression for Japanese fine arts. What’s interesting is the art work found on screens, scrolls, and fans was often recycled from one form to another. Depending on the artist’s whim, a customer’s preference, or even damage to an artistic depiction, the image would be transferred to and/or incorporated in a subsequent rendering on another screen, scroll, or fan.
