The Japanese word Geisha, when translated to English, means “person of the arts.” The first Geisha were men who entertained through dance, music, and poetry. By the 1800’s, Geishas were exclusively female, and these young women underwent rigorous apprenticeship programs to learn their craft. Today, the traditional Geisha has virtually disappeared from Japan, with only occasional performances at historical and cultural festivals.
