Waterford crystal, creators of the spectacular crystal ball that has descended at the “crossroads of the world” since the milennium celebration on New Year’s Eve 1999, will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the ball drop with a magnificent new ball design for 2008: the Times Square Ball 100th Anniversary Collection of Waterford Crystal. Beginning with “Let There Be Light,” Waterford designers will create a signature cut-crystal design for each edition that will be incorporated into the new Waterford Crystal Times Square Ball. The inaugural image, “Let There Be Light,” is a dramatically styalized, radiating sunburst. This distinctive pattern will be replicated in fine commemorative holiday ornaments and crystal giftware. The focal point of the collection will be the Times Square Ball Ornament. Philips Lighting, creators of the LED lighting that illumination the Times Square Ball itself, has developed the technology that adds a battery powered LED light source to illuminate and enhance the ornament’s crystal craftsmanship. Subsequent annual releases in the Times Square series will include “Let There Be Joy,” “Let There Be Courage,” “Let There Be Love,” “Let There Be Friendship,” and “Let There Be Peace.”New Yorkers have been dropping the ball in Times Square for 100 years as of New Year’s Eve 2007. Since 1999, the featured ball has been a fabulous creation of Waterford Crystal. To celebrate the 100th anniversary and ring in 2008, Waterford designed a completely new ball, spectacularly lit with energy-efficient LED lights in the inaugural theme, Let There Be Light. Carrying this theme into commemorative giftware, Waterford unveiled its 2008 Times Square collection of crystal Champagne flutes, martini glasses, ornaments, and other unique items for the home. Subsequent years of the Let There Be series will feature joy, courage, love, friendship, and peace.

There’s nothing like light to bring out the brilliant sparkle of Waterford full-lead crystal. Cut with a radiating sunburst design, this 4-1/2-inch ball ornament has a secret: a tiny but long-lasting LED light is encapsulated in the cap of the ornament. A wire runs from the cap to a separate battery pack containing 3 AA batteries (included). Simply hang the ball on a holiday tree with its embossed silver ribbon, and hide the battery pack behind a nearby branch by means of an attached hook-and-loop strip. A switch on the pack lets you choose between continually on, completely off, or sensor mode, in which the light will come on when it senses other lights illuminated on the tree. A technologically unusual gift made in Ireland, the Times Square ball ornament arrives in an elegant gray-and-silver Waterford box, a world-recognized symbol of excellence. –Ann Bieri
